About the
Exhibition

This eye-opening exhibition was held in celebration of over 100 years of creative expression by women and non-binary artists including Paula Rego, Cindy Sherman, Elisabeth Frink and many more.

From internal musings to powerful social commentary, this unique showcase explored diverse themes through paintings, drawings, and more. For the first time, two renowned UK collections joined forces to bring iconic masterpieces and fresh perspectives that moved, provoked, and delighted.

Drawn from two of the UK’s leading art collections, The Women’s Art Collection and The Ingram Collection, A Spirit Inside brought together a selection of works spanning over 100 years. Exploring how women and non-binary artists have grappled with the notion and sense of ‘spirit’, the themes range from mythology and internal contemplation to external, often political, expression.

This exhibition marked the first time that the Women’s Art Collection, Europe’s largest collection of art by women, has partnered with art galleries outside of Cambridge, providing a wider opportunity for the British public to see some of the most important 20th and 21st century works by women and non-binary artists. These works were complemented by a selection from The Ingram Collection, one of the best collections of modern and contemporary British art in the UK.
